The House of Representative’s special session over the removal of fuel subsidy has turned a shouting match with lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opposing the state minister of petroleum’ Ibe Kachukwu’s presentation.
The special session was summoned by the leadership of the House to discuss the removal of fuel subsidy, but soon after the speaker Yakubu Dogara overruled the PDP members in the admittance of the minister into the chamber, the session went into a sustained rowdiness.
PDP members, who carried National Flags, stood up, and started shouting “No”, “No” in displeasure of speaker’s decision to overrule them, and subsequently disrupted the proceeding.
They unanimously waved the flags, shouting “All we are saying, save Nigeria” for about 10 minutes, as speaker watched helplessly.
Deputy speaker, and other principal officer appealed to the members, but the shouting became louder, when some APC members attempted to counter their colleagues.
Normalcy returned after 15 minutes, in which the speaker described the situation as the “beauty of the democracy” for people to air their views freely.
Subsequently, after discussion between the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, leader of the House, Femi Gabajabiamila, minority leader, Leo Ogor, the lawmakers went into closed door session.
