3 nabbed for gun possession in Batangas checkpoint.
Three men were arrested by police authorities at a checkpoint in Barangay Poblacion here on Wednesday for illegal possession of firearms and violation of the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
PCI Manuel Maligaya, San pascual police chief, identified the suspects as Jaime Garcia, 44; Jennelyn Nejar, 23, both residents of Barangay Talaga, Mabini, Batangas. They accosted Jonnie Viñas, 39, of Barangay Bayanan, San Pascual, Batangas for the same offense.
Police reports said that at about 11:40 p.m., elements of the said police station were conducting a Comelec checkpoint operation at the Caltex Intersection in said barangay when they flagged down a Yamaha XT motorcycle (license plate DC-82087) whose riders Garcia and Jennelyn Nejar were not wearing helmets.
The two failed to show the certificate of registration and official receipt of the said motorcycle.
P01 Oriol spotted a protruding handle of gun tucked on Garcia’s waist while other police officers saw another firearm from Nejar’s shoulder bag.
They recovered from the duo two caliber .45 pistols with four magazines and 25 live ammunitions and their Yamaha XT motorcycle.
Moments later, another suspect Viñas, believed to be under the influence of liquor, arrived at the same checkpoint. Police recovered a caliber .38 revolver tucked in his waist.
They also confiscated from the suspect five cartridge cases and a live ammunition of said gun.
Maligaya said they have already requested the Firearms and Explosives Division of the Philippine National Police to verify if the said suspects were legitimate firearms holders while the seized firearms will be turned over to the Batangas Crime Laboratory Office for ballistics examination.
The said suspects are presently detained at the San Pascual police’s lock-up cell facing charges of violation of the Omnibus Election Code.
Additional charges of violation of the Republic Act 10591 will follow if the suspects were proven to be illegal possessors of firearms.
