Egbeda Murder: Court remands man who allegedly killed wife.
An Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court, sitting at Oyingbo yesterday remanded at Ikoyi Prisons, Lekan Shonde, who allegedly killed his wife Ronke Shonde pending the legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution DPP.
Shonde’s remand came on a day his deceased wife was buried at Atan Cemetry in Yaba, Lagos amidst wailing from family members, relations and friends.
At exactly 11: 30 am the alleged wife killer Lekan Shonde arrived Ebute- Metta Magistrate Court in police Rapid Response pick up Van and after staying in the Van for about 20 minutes, the police then took him to Court 5.
The defendant who wore a black Tee- Shirt, and a cream coloured combat short was arraigned at about 12:15 pm before Magistrate O I Adelaja on a one count charge of murder.
In the charge sheet, Olalekan Shonde 51, a dock worker was alleged to have murdered his wife, one Ronke Shonde 37 on May 5, 2016, at about 2:30pm at 3, Tiemo street, Egbeda Lagos, by giving her fist blow on her head.
According to the charge, the offence is punishable under section 221 of the Criminal law of Lagos state 2011.
During his arraignment the charge was read to him, though his plea was not taken. Shonde however denied killing his wife saying “I did not kill her”.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione then urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody to enable him send the case file to DPP’s office for legal advice.
The magistrate thereafter ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody pending DPP’s advice.
Meanwhile the defendant’s counsel I. V Mohammed who appeared before the court did not oppose the remand order.
It will be recalled that the dock worker allegedly killed his wife two weeks ago during a scuffle that ensued between them at their Egbeda residence in Lagos.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, had on Thursday confirmed that the command had concluded its investigations and would charge the suspect to court.
