The Council of Islamic Ideology has proposed a law that stipulates that a husband should be allowed to
‘lightly beat’ his wife if she goes against his commands and refuses to dress up as per his desires, or turns down demands for intercourse without any religious excuse, or menstrual period excuse.
The 20-member council is a constitutional body of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, but can only advise the government rather than make laws.
Its latest proposals come as part of its own women protection bill, after it rejected Punjab province’s controversial Protection of Women against Violence Act, branding it un-Islamic.
‘A husband should be allowed to lightly beat his wife if she defies his commands and refuses to dress up as per his desires; turns down demand of intercourse without any religious excuse or does not take bath after intercourse or menstrual periods.’
